In addition to the Housing Advocacy Program, CAAS operates Head Start for 267 children in Cambridge and Somerville, assists Somerville residents with community and tenant organizing efforts, and is the volunteer income tax assistance provider in Somerville. CAAS has been the federally designated anti-poverty agency serving Somerville since 1981. ![]() “Our new director of community affairs, Dwan Packnett, formerly with the City of Boston’s Office of Economic Development, is bringing over 20 years of housing and land use experience to direct Sira’s investment in people and communities impacted by the war on drugs.”ĬAAS helps local families and individuals achieve financial security while working to eliminate the root causes of economic injustice. “Sira hopes to create a model for non-profit partnerships benefiting communities,” said Michael Dundas, Sira Naturals’ president. This suite of services, which includes eviction prevention, benefits enrollment, service referrals and housing search, is a resource for the many families affected by the fast pace of gentrification in Somerville. Housing search and stabilization is one of several services provided by CAAS within its Housing Advocacy Program. The funding, $17,000 per year, will help support a housing counselor position for low-income residents facing eviction. Community Action Agency of Somerville recently announced the donation by Sira Naturals, a medical and recreational marijuana business with a dispensary in Davis Square, of $51,000 to support CAAS’ Housing Search and Stabilization services over the next three years. ![]()
